Newtown Blues G.F.C. was founded on 12th July 1887. A unique harmonization of urban and rural communities at the time. The club, which was based east of Drogheda town, now finds itself in the heart of urban development. Attracting its core base from this area, the club enjoys a reputation and standing within the community which goes beyond the confines of Drogheda, Newtown and the Newfoundwell Road where it has its club house and playing fields.

In 1889 the Blues won their first of 23 “Senior Championships”, a record which they hold to this day with the most recent success coming in 2019.  The club also boasts of 6 “Minor Championships”, 4 “Junior Championships” and numerous under 21 and underage titles. The Blues Ladies added to the club achievements being the first Drogheda club to win a Senior Championship in 2014.

The club caters for senior teams at the highest level but draws its very existence from the local community, with teams from under 8, (children from as young as 5 years old) level to under 18 level catered for. The club has a proud record of participation in both male and female competitions and have consistently provided players to the county teams at all grades. 

In 1987, Newtown Blues purchased 10 acres at Newfoundwell, which was developed into a full size playing pitch and 2 juvenile pitches. Phase 1 of our development was completed in the early 1990’s when dressing rooms, storage shed and a car park were developed. In 2000 the second phase of the development which included clubhouse extension was completed with the aid of the Capital Grant Programme.

Newtown Blues GFC are undertaking a considerable sized redevelopment project of their field and playing area in the coming year. The club is at the heart of a very vibrant community and our facilities are used by many various community-based organisations with 700 people using our grounds each week at peak times of the year. Although the existing facilities have served the club well over the last number of years they are now seriously over-used and in great need of development. Due to the growth of the local community and increase in demand for the existing and new facilities, the club has embarked on an ambitious project to upgrade the current facilities in 2009.

SPORTING OBJECTIVES

The club objectives are divided between those ‘on the field’ and those off the field’. They are further divided into short, medium and long term objectives.

The Newtown Blues have adapted the mission statement “participation is success”, and this holds true for all aspects of the club and community.

Short Term Objectives

The Newtown Blues short term objectives are to oversee the implementation of their new development without interfering with their present intense programme of activities. Continue on the recent success to win Louth senior title and challenge for the Leinster Club and All-Ireland Club Championships.

Medium Term Objectives

The Clubs medium term objective is to achieve success and improvement on the field to reward the efforts and reflect the sacrifices made by many to provide excellent facilities. We wish to encourage the new neighbours and residents to participate and join the club community. The club while strong at all junior levels wish to develop the ladies football to a level where not alone compete but also win.

Long Term Objectives

To provide its members with ‘standards of excellence’ through facilities and leadership of the highest degree. To be regarded in the community as a friend but to be regarded in the country as a winner.
